An addition to The Bookshelf:
Operation World - Jason Mandryk

This extraordinary volume is the seventh edition of a work begun by Patrick Johnstone which was first published in 1974 and continuously updated as world events warranted. It is intended as a prayer guide for the needs of the world (both Christian and physical needs) which has a schedule that proceeds continent by continent and then nation by nation. The format is as well done as any geographical atlas available, yet the information is presented with a uniquely Christian perspective. Each entry communicates valuable insight into the Christian work being done in that country or area, and the prayer needs are clear and relevant. Data is gathered from sources as diverse as the United Nations database and letters from local pastors and Christian leaders in each location.

"Eschew verbose people. It is difficult to respect someone who requires a thousand words to say what you can say with twenty. It is equally difficult to listen to someone who cannot let you get your twenty words out without interrupting."

"If you expose a problem, it is only fair that you also propose a solution."

"... and that's a lie straight out of the pit of Washington, D. C. !"

Here are the ones that got us started:
"I've given up on Strauss and Howe and their whole Generations thing. We have enough problems with being unfairly labeled for the most miniscule of reasons without people saying that a whole generation of us is alike just because of the things that went on around us. If you think about it, it's little more than just another zodiac."

"The party lifestyle has to be not only one of the most damaging, but also one of the most BORING forms of sin that we have. You go to a noisy, crowded place, drink foul-tasting liquor, hit on (or get hit on by) a real low-life, stagger home, throw up, and wake up the next morning with a splitting headache and search for your underwear. Then you do it all again the following weekend. You would think that this would lose its appeal to any reasonable person by at least the third or fourth time; but these hard headed folks are so easily addicted to this that they can't seem to think of any of the thousands of better ways to have fun."
"I heard that somebody wanted to burn some copies of the Qu'ran on September 11th. Seems to me that if he really wants to burn a dangerous and blasphemous book, he'd be better off doing it to The Audacity of Hope."

"Political campaigns have gotten so spooky lately that it explains why Election Day comes so close after Halloween."

"If you give $100,000 to a rich man, chances are he'll find a way to turn it into a million. If you give $100,000 to a poor man, chances are he'll snort it up his nose. Most of us are somewhere in between."

"Those who can, do. Those who can't, run for office. Those who can't get elected ... well, it's probably because they are doing."
